Top 10 Beginner Photography tips

1. Take LOts of Photos

  • Learn about your camera by using it often
  • Don't be afraid to experiment
  • Discover what works as a photo
  • Learn from your mistakes

2. Learn the basics of composition

  • Apply the rule of thirds
  • Use shapes in your photos
  • Try to use lines and patterns
  • Look to frame your subjects

3. use aperture priority

  • Large aperture = background blur
  • Small aperture = all in focus
  • 'A' mode lets you choose aperture
  • Camera selects correct shutter speed

4. use Shutter priority

  • Fast shutter speed = freeze motion
  • Slow shutter speed = blur motion
  • 'S' mode lets you choose shutter speed
  • Camera chooses correct aperture

5. change your viewpoint

  • Don't always stand up
  • Get on the same level as your subject
  • Shoot from the floor
  • Original angles = more interesting photos

6. forget about kit

  • Get to know the kit you have
  • Invest in your knowledge
  • Learn the limits of your kit
  • More kit = more confusion

7. Think about each photo

  • Don't just snap away
  • What is the reason for each photo?
  • What should be included / excluded?
  • How is the best way to take each photo?

8. Get inspiration

  • Join Flickr, 500px and other photo sites
  • Favourite the photos you like
  • Think about why you like photos
  • Try to replicate good photos

9. Think about light

  • Hard and soft light have different effects
  • Direct sun = hard light and shdows
  • Cloudy = soft light and shadows
  • Portraits are best in soft light

10. Share your photos

  • Share on the web and social media
  • Ask for feedback
  • Use criticism to improve
  • Enjoy the praise for your best shots!
