PREVALENCE IN THE USA:

  • Common in children from their: 
  • preschool years-middle aged teenagers

PREVALENCE CONTINUED

  • Frequent exposure to germs... Like:
  • Close contact with peers
  • Frequent exposure to viruses/bacteria

SIGNS:

  • Otoalgia (ear pain)
  • Headache
  • Tenderness of jaw/throat
  • Red, swollen tonsils

Symptoms

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever/chills
  • Sore throat (if lasts
  • Problems breathing
  • Consumption problems

COULD LEAD TO...

Kidney inflammation, rheumatic fever

CAN CAUSE...

Viral/ bacterial infections; social contact/airborn

Diagnostic tests and description

  • Health care provider looks in the mouth & throat
  • -> Tonsils may be red with white spots
  • -> lymph nodes in jaw & neck may be swollen & tender to touch

Diagnostic tests

  • rapid strep test(performed in doc office)
  • doc sends test to lab for strep culture

Current treatments (Med.):

  • Antibiotics-> OTC tylenol/ibuprofen/shots
  • If orally, you must take ALL pills til its gone
  • symptoms improve 2-3 days

Treatment (procedures):

  • Drink cold liquids
  • suck on fruit flavored frozen bars
  • drink warm, bland fluids
  • gargle with warm salt water
  • suck on lozenges to reduce pain

Probable outcomes:

  • getting better after 2-3 days of treatment w/ antibiotics
  • children kept from school
  • OR until 24 hours after antibiotics have been consumed
