Me, me, me!

Egocentric; view the world through their perspective, not through others.

Centration

  • Psychological equivalent to "tunnel vision"
  • Children concentrate on one part of a problem, not all parts
  • Narrowly focused thought

Appearance vs. Reality

  • An objects appearance is also its reality.
  • Halloween Mask; Scares them even if they watch it being put on
  • Milk through sunglasses; They think the milk is brown.
  • Very hard for preoperational children to distinguish what is real

Representational Thought

  • Ability to think (plan) before acting
  • This skill is developing in toddlers
  • Cruicial to math, reading, writing skills.
