PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TKAM NOVEL VS. FILM

MAIREAD MCMAHON #12

1. The director skipped a lot of the beginning of the novel to where the real drama and action began. For example, they did not show whether or not Aunt Alexandra came to live with the Finches or not.

The director didn't choose to add in the beginning parts of the novel probably because it wasn't as important to spend a lot of time on filming it and wanted to get right to the action scenes.

2. After Tom Robinson lost the trial, Atticus was told he had been shot once and died trying to escape, but in the novel, he was told that Tom had been shot 17 times.

This scene was probably changed because being shot 17 times may have been too harsh for the viewers watching because of the fact that he is African American.

3. Jem and Scout found gum wrappers and items in a tree hole by the Radley's house on their way home from school every morning but in the movie, Jem found them just on a random day outside their house not near the school.

I think the director chose to change this up to make the viewers more curious about what each item meant and why each of the items were related to them.

4. At the trial of Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell started shouting and breaking apart in the movie, but in the novel, she was just a quiet, shy girl who didn't really speak up for herself.

This change in a scene just added more drama, which is what many viewers like to see in movies, so the director just tried to do what the people watching it wanted to see.

5. Also at the trial, Atticus proved that Tom Robinson had an injured left arm by tossing a glass to him to catch, but in the novel, Atticus just realized while Tom was being questioned, his left arm was slipping off his chair.

The director probably changed this scene because he wanted the viewers to be wondering where Atticus was going with the tossing of the glass.
If they just showed Tom's arm slipping off the chair, it would be too confusing.
