"The biggest parties were held, however, at Christmas. There were certain holidays that were celebrated on most plantations- Good Friday, Independance Day, and at the end of cotton-chopping season. Christmas, however, was the biggest celebration. Discipline was eased considerably and the slaves were given two or three days off, and sometimes they got the entire week between Christmas and New Year."
