JEWISH CULTURAL TERMINOLOGY
PAYOS:
Payos are side locks worn by some Orthodox Jewish men. They are worn in accordance with Scripture and as respect to God.
Rebbe:
Leader of the Orthodox Jewish community. He is in charge of the Synagogue and leads Bar Mitzvahs. The Rebbe helps spiritually guide the community to God.
Torah:
Is the first five books of the Bible. The Torah is studied and read by the community. It is usually read at Bar Mitzvahs, as part of the young boy’s right of passage. The boy must recite the Torah in Hebrew.
Chumash:
Is the Torah in book form. It is more convenient to read and allows everyone of the Jewish community to read Scripture.
