Badlands National park is located in southwestern South Dakota.
It covers around 243 thousand acres .
It was established as a national monument first in 1939
It was later established as as a national park in 1978

Formed from millions of years deposition & erosion
Like the Grand Canyon, was eroded from rivers & streams
Will erode away completely in 500 thousand years

The US claimed it was a useless, uninhabitable land
However, they later found it was rich in Uranium
In the early 40's, it was used as a bombing range
Certain parts are not accessible

NATIVE AMERICAN INFLUENCE
Is considered sacred land by the Great Sioux Nation
Many Native American sacred ceremonies performed here
Called the Stronghold to the Sioux
