GREEK INNOVATIONS

  • The ancient Greeks had many innovative ideas about the universe.
  • The Greeks indroduced many ideas about government that we still use today.
  • They made many advances in mathematics, astronomy, liturature, and philosophy

EARLY PEOPLE OF THE AEGEAN

  • The Minoan people setted on the island of Crete
  • They were the first Civilization in the region
  • The Minoan people thrived between 1600 B.C and 1500 B.C.
  • In 1400 B.C the Minoan Civilization dissapeared
  • A natural disaster is believed to be the cause of the people's dissapearence

EARLY PEOPLE OF THE AEGEAN

  • The Mycenaeans dominated the Greek mainland between 1400 B.C. and 1200 B.C.
  • The Mycenaeans adapted both Egyptian and Mesopotamian ideas
  • The Mycenaens are best remembered for the Trojan War
  • The poet Homer decribed the wars in his poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey
  • These poems show alot about the values and religion of the ancient Greeks

THE RISE OF GREEK CITY-STATES

  • Though differnet the Greek city-states had mutual culture
  • They had the smae language, religion, and festivals
  • They were talented salors and traitors because of their access to theMedditerrain
  • Greeks developed a new version of the city-state called the polis
  • They built cities on two levels with the acropolis on the hilltop

GOVERNING CITY-STATEs

  • The first ruler of the polis was a king
  • slowly the power was handed over to noble land owners
  • as trade expanded a new middle class of merchants, farmers, and artisans formed
  • they challenged the land owners for power and came to rule some city-states
  • the result was a form of government called an oligarchy

SPARTA AND ATHENS

  • Sparta was society that based life primarily arond fighting
  • Athens developed into a democracy and revolved around knowledge
  • democracy is a government run by the people, only men participated

VICTORY AND DEFEAT IN THE GREEK WORLD

  • Athens and sparta ame together to defend themselves against Persia
  • After the Persia Athens flourished under the rule of Pericles
  • Democracy and culture thrived under his rule
  • Athens created a direct democracy, so power shifted to citizens

THE GLORY THAT WAS GREECE

  • Greeks had great faith in the power of the human mind
  • many Greek artists, writers, and philosophers denied that gods had influence on events
  • instead they used observations and reasson to the find causes of events that happened
  • philosophers like Socrates and Aristole deveoped new ideas about truth and government

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

  • King Phillip of Macedonia bulit a superb army
  • He eventually controlled all of Greece
  • After his death, his son Alexander took over
  • Alexender's victories spread Greek culture across the Mediterranean world
  • The Greek culture's legacy influenced the Rome and Western Europe
