BACKGROUND

  • Crustose coralline algae covers the surface of the coral's panels
  • This suffocates the coral

SOLUTION

  • Parrotfish eat the algae off of the coral

PARROTFISH

  • Parrotfish are herbivores
  • Their diet consists of algae removed from parts of coral ripped from a reef
  • They pulverize the coral by grinding their teeth to get to the algae-filled polyps inside

  • Parrotfish basically act as a lawn mower to the coral
  • Their job is to eat the fast-growing seaweeds so they do not overgrow on the corals
