THE ROARING 20'S A TIME FOR CHANGE

PROHIBITON

  • The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution made making, selling, and transporting alcohol illegal
  • It was passed on Jan. 16, 1919, but went into effect Jan. 16, 1920
  • It was passed because of pressure from members of the Temperance Movement. They blamed alcohol for many problems in the US and thought it should be outlawed.

Al Capone

  • Born to an immigrant family in Brooklyn, NY in 1899
  • Quit school after the sixth grade
  • Associated with a notorious street gang
  • Lieutenant in the Colosimo mob
  • Succeeded to full leadership of the gang
  • Died due to stroke and pneumonia on Jan. 25, 1947

"BABY FACE" NELSON

  • Born Lester M. Gillis on December 6, 1908
  • By the age of 14 he was an accomplished car thief
  • He was called "Baby Face" by members of his gang due to his juvenile appearance
  • In 1932 he escaped prison guards while being returned to Joliet
  • He was closely associated with another gangster John Paul Chase

BUGS MORAN

  • Became leader of the North Side Gang in 1927
  • Known as being guns-ho and not afraid of being the leader in a bloody shoot-out
  • Involved in a feud with his rival Al Capone
  • Involved in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre
  • Moran's power began to wane in the 1930's

THE FLAPPER

  • In the 1920's a new woman was born
  • She smoked, drank, danced, and voted
  • She cut her hair, wore make-up, and took risks

THE 19TH AMENDMENT

  • After a 70 year battle women emerged victorious with the passage of the 19th Amendment
  • It gave women the right to vote

THE CRASH

  • On Oct. 29, 1929 "Black Tuesday" happened
  • The stock market crashed
  • It was the deepest and longest lasting economic downturn in the history of the western industrialized world
  • 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and almost half of the US banks failed
  • This was the end of the Roaring Twenties
