WH Auden warning against Utopia seeking and the evil in our own hearts.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW GOVERNMENTS GROW

WITH POETRY AND INSIGHT FROM WH AUDEN

He smiles well, he smells of the future,
Odorless ages and ordered world
Of planned pleasures and passport control,
Sentry-go, sedatives, soft drinks and
Managed money, a moral planet
Tamed by terror, his telegram sets
Grey masses moving as the mud dries.

MORE THAN EVER LIFE-OUT-THERE IS GOODLY, MIRACULOUS, LOVEABLE, BUT WE SHAN’T, NOT SINCE STALIN AND HITLER, TRUST OURSELVES EVER AGAIN: WE KNOW THAT, SUBJECTIVELY, ALL IS POSSIBLE.

Out of the mirror they stare,
Imperialism’s face
And the international wrong.

Evil is unspectacular and always human.
It shares our bed and eats at our table.

Even Hitler, I imagine, would have defined his New Jerusalem as a world where there are no Jews, not as a world where they are being gassed by the million day after day in ovens, but he was a Utopian, so the ovens had to come in.
