WHO IS HE?

  • Thomas More was born in London, England on Febuary 7, 1478
  • Attended St. Anthony School in London then at Oxford University
  • When he was younger, he served as a page for John Morton
  • He was a Philosopher, Lawyer, and Journalist
  • In 1503 he moved to a monastery

KEY EVENTS

  • Joined Parliament in 1504
  • 1513-1518 wrote "The History of King Richard III" and "Utopia" in 1516
  • Served as Counselor of King Henry VIII
  • 1523 he was elected to the house of commons but resigned in 1532
  • 1534 did not accept King Henry as head of the Church of England

AFTERLIFE

  • April 17, 1534 sent to Tower of London and found guilty of Treason
  • July 6, 1535 he was beheaded
  • Beatuified in 1886
  • Canonized as a Saint in 1935
  • Known as the "Reformation Martyr"

THOMAS MORE'S CONSCIENCE DEVELOPMENT

  • Stage 6 of Kohlberg's Theory of Conscience Development
  • Stood for what he thought was right, Followed his conscience
  • Even though it meant losing his life he stood against King Henry VIII
  • Never accepted him as head of the church of England because of his devorices
  • In the end it cost him his life
