PROPERTIES OF MATTER

BY DEVIN HAIRE AND HAILEY SKOWRONSKI

MASS

  • large body of matter with no definite shape
  • Mass can be measured with balance or scale
  • M=F/A (m=mass, F=force, A=acceleration)
  • Metric units of mass are kilograms and grams
  • Temperature can change mass

WEIGHT

  • a body's relative mass; the heaviness of a person or things
  • Can be measured with a scale
  • W=mg (W= weight, m=mass, g= gravitational acceleration)
  • grams, kilograms, milligrams
  • Age and size can change weight

VOLUME

  • the amount of space that a substance or object occupies
  • You can measure volume w/ measuring cups & graduated cylinder
  • V= lwh (length, width, height)
  • Metric units of volume are liters and milliliters
  • Size can change the volume of an object

DENSITY

  • The degree of compactness of a substance
  • You can measure density with a hydrometer
  • D=m/v (mass/volume)
  • Grams and centimeters are used to measure density
  • Temperature and pressure can change density
