HARRIET TUBMAN

CHILDHOOD

  • She was born to the name Araminta Ross
  • She adopted the name harriet from her mother
  • Born a slave and raised on Maryland eastern shore,
  • Her exact birthday is unknow but somewhere around the year 1820

MARRIAGE

  • She married John tubman in 1844
  • He was a free black man
  • In 1849, Harriet fled to Pennsylvania but her husband didnt gomwith her
  • He later remarried
  • The Slavery lines caused freedom and slaverynto be blurred in there land resulting in free people marring slaves

MOSES

  • Harriet got the name moses after leaving slaves to freedom
  • Atter fleeing to pennsilvania a free state in 1849 she made trips to Maryland
  • In all of her trips she did not loose a single passenger
  • Over 10 years she made 19 trips and led over 300 slaves to freedom
  • She rescued both her family memeber and strangers in an effort to bring them a better life

DANGERS

  • Many slave holders posted boundaries
  • The fugitive act passed in 1850 was a danger to harriet
  • It imposed seriouse punishments for assisting escape root

JOBS

  • She was proponent of women suffrage
  • Worked alog the side of Susan B Anthony and other promant women
  • Worked for the union as a cook in the army
  • She was a nurse and also a spy

JOHN BROWN

  • Harriet believed in the abolitionists movement
  • She worked with John Brown the laeder of the movement
  • He called her general Tubman
  • He consulted with her about plans to raid harpers ferry

FAMILY

  • She had one daughter with her second husband Nelson Davis
  • He daughters name was Gertie Davis
  • Her mother was Harriet Greene and gather Ben Ross
  • She had 7 siblings; four sisters and three brothers

INJURIES

  • In her teens she stood up fr a fellow slave and got beat down
  • She suffered life long headaches and even seizures
  • Sje also had vivid dream because of the head injury
  • These simptons cause powerful visions which sue described to God
  • They helped her guide the trips to the North

DEATH

  • Harriet died in 1930 from pneumonia
  • Just before her death she told friends and family "i go to prepare a place for you."
  • She was barried in forthill cemetary with miltary honners
