TIMELINE OF EUROPEAN EXPLORATION

  • In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered America.
  • In 1519, Pineda was ordered by the Spanish government to explore the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to find a passage from the gulf to the orient. They went under the 3 G's: Gold, Glory, God. Soon, conquistadors arrived in the Americas. Pineda and Cortes explored and colonized the gulf area including, Texas and Mexico. Then, they brought back the silver and gold they found back to Spain.

  • In 1527, De Vaca landed in Tampa Bay, Florida then landed in Galveston, Texas. He and his crew ran into the Karankawas.

The Karankawas tried to help them but, they didn't help them back and they got them sick. So, they made them their slaves.

But, De Vaca learned enough about medicine to help out. They were also the first Europeans to see the American buffalo.

In 1540, Coronado a Spanish conquistador, went on a mission to find gold. He wanted to search the cities of gold such as, Cibola. He didn't find treasure but, he did find the Grand Canyon. Towards the end of his life he lived in Mexico City.

In 1667, the French King Louis XIV told la Salle to sail to South Canada and sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. But, his crew thought he was a bad leader so, they killed him and left his body for the animals. Most of the men were killed by natives.
