PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TIER II SUPPORTS

KAREN NEIFER

Prevention Logic for All

Focuses on the redesign of teaching environments, not redesign of students. The purpose of Tier II is to support the approximately 15% of students behaviorally at-risk.

KEY FEATURES

  • Use data to identify students at-risk for behavioral difficulties.
  • Prevent the development and/or intensity of students’ problem behaviors.
  • Provide standardized interventions that effectively and efficiently support students.

Interventions are often provided in a group format, include standardized practices and systems that are designed to supplement Tier 1efforts.

INTERVENTIONS SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Continuously available
  • Quickly and easily accessible
  • Minimal time commitment from classroom teacher
  • Skills can be learned easily
  • Aligned with SWPBIS expectations

Untitled Slide

  • All personnel are aware of the interventions and their roles in the process
  • Consistently implemented with most students but with some flexibility
  • Program selected is matched to the function of student’s behavior

EXAMPLES OF GROUP-ORIENTED INTERVENTIONS

  • Check-In, Check-Out
  • Social Skills Intervention Groups
  • Self Monitoring
  • Check & Connect
  • First Step Next
  • Academic Instructional Groups

School teams create a system to purposefully identify students who may require more intensive interventions.

SYSTEM OF DATA REVIEW

  • Office referrals (ODR)
  • Absences
  • Tardies
  • GPA
  • Course grades
  • Frequency of counselor or nurse visits
  • Examine daily schedule

READINESS FOR TIER II

  • 80% on the SAS (all four systems)
  • ODRs indicate 80% of population at 0-1
  • Consistent use of data reports

Will increase likelihood programs will be implemented and monitored with fidelity

SECURING STAFF COMMITMENT

  • Provide learning opportunities
  • Confirm by an official process
