A player/parent handbook covering all things related to this softball program will be given to student athletes after tryouts. We have had to add and adjust tryouts and rules due to our shortened season this will be discussed tonight.

There is a player contract and parent contract that must be signed and returned to the coaching staff prior to our first game. It deals with honoring the game and putting the team first.

Our softball program promotes multi sport athletes....with one exception. If it is the HS softball season you shouldn’t be playing club volleyball, soccer, basketball, etc. at that time. Consider your teammates and coaches if you choose to play in a club volleyball tourney over the weekend, and then we all lose our starting short stop because she sprained an ankle or blew out an ACL it hurts the team. We never expect to see volleyball kids etc. during off season softball and we expect the same respect.

OSAA/DISTRICT COVID RULES

  • No buses this year. Athletes have to find their own way to games.
  • Spectators will be allowed per current district policy, please check with Justin Starck if we will be allowed similar to our Fall Sports.
  • Currently, masks are worn at all times.
  • Athletes will check in/out for practices.
  • If an athlete is sick or not 100% stay home! If the coaching staff feels an athlete is suspect we will send them home.

Normal season we would have 2-3 days of tryouts then over a full week of practice. This year we have 5 days of practice before our first game. That’s it. A normal 26 game 14 week season (with playoffs) has now turned into a 6 week 15 game season with a “culminating event,” that hasn’t been defined yet. With this time crunch we will have one 2.5-3 hour tryout and athletes will be placed on teams. Just like any other year players move back and forth from jv to varsity. Nothing is set in stone. All athletes competing in fall sports will be put into varsity practice and given 2-3 days to be evaluated and then placed on respective team.

We determine game and practice time and location last minute, usually thanks to the great Oregon spring weather. Please be flexible and patient. Check the band app. We will do everything in our power to get games in and have proven this the last 4 years.

Players Spirit Packs this year are $85. Players will all wear the same color t shirt on a specific day. We are promoting commitment and loyalty to our HS program this way. BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL. Tops are listed on the band app and given on a paper calendar. Please pay cash or make checks out to: THURSTON SOFTBALL !

We need your help at the field work party on April 10th, 10-2 and April 11th, 2-6. The district mows the grass. That’s about it. If we want to take pride in our fields we have to do it. Same with fundraising. Anything we need or want is up to us!

Finally if there are any issues we have a 24 hour rule. Set up a meeting with a coach after 24 hours have passed. Be prepared to have your athlete attend as it is her athletic career. We would hope that all athletes are able to advocate for themselves as this best prepares them for the real world.

Thank you all for taking the time out tonight for Thurston Softball are there any questions?
