WHAT IS A THUNDERSTORM?

  • A storm with lightning and thunder
  • Usually produced by cumulonimbus clouds
  • Produces gusty winds, heavy rain, and hail
  • Dry thunderstorms can cause wildfires when lightning strikes the ground
  • Flash flooding

HOW DO THEY FORM?

  • Thunderstorms are formed by the uplifting of warm and humid air
  • Humid air is lifted, it will cool, condense, and form a cloud
  • The cloud will continue growing to about 10-20 kilometers
  • Raindrops continue to grow in size

WHY ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

  • Lightning can kill humans
  • Lightning can strike buildings
  • Strong wind, hail, and tornadoes are associated with thunderstorms
  • Flash flooding
  • Dry thunderstorms can cause wildfires when lightning strikes the ground
