  • Jacob and Sam live there in an apartment.
  • This is where the story starts out.

  • A boy who lives in New York with his stepdad Sam.
  • He is determined, smart, strong, and finishes what he starts.
  • He is determined because he does not stop when he is trying to find his father.
  • Jacob is Dr. Robert Lansa's son.

Dr. Robert Lansa

  • A field biologist who works with elephants in Africa.
  • He is determined because he keeps trying to save elephants from the poachers, even though they are dangerous.
  • He does not get to see Jacob often because he is in Africa and Jacob is in New York.

  • Taw is Jacobs grandfather.
  • He is a Hopi and follows the Hopi ways, sometimes reading the future.
  • He is calm, smart, and content.
  • He lives in a convalescent home because he has insomnia.
