THREE COMPROMISES

CONNECTICUT COMPROMISE

  • Disagreement over representation in congress led to this
  • Gave smaller states equality
  • Congress should be composed of 2 houses
  • Senate represented equally
  • House- represented based on size of population

THREE-fIFTHS COMPROMISE

  • Count the population of states for taxing
  • All slaves are counted as three fifths of the population
  • Have to pay extra for slaves
  • Rich have to pay more for slaves
  • Showed tensions between north and south

COMMERCE AND SLAVE TRADE

  • Congress was forbidden to tax the export of any state
  • Couldn't stop if for up to 20 years
  • Allowed the south to have a big boom without being taxed
  • Would get out of hand with trade
  • No longer agricultural (could lead to slave trade)
