  • Is that his family was poor.
  • At the age of 13 he left school to help his father.
  • At the age of 19 he was shipped out on a privateer in the seven years war.
  • In a few months how ever he left and became an apprentice to a London manufacturer.
  • Finally becoming an officer of the excise.
  • His duties were to hunt for smugglers and collect the excise taxes on liquor and tobacco.

LIFE AFTER THE WAR

  • Between March 1791 and February 1792 he published numerous editions of his Rights of man.
  • After the American Revolution Paine worked on several inventions including a smokeless candle.
  • He defended the French Revolution against the attacks by Edmund Burke.
