Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the U.S. and France. Jefferson sent James Madison to buy the land. They bought Louisiana for 15 mil. dollars.

Barbary Pirates

  • Captured many American Ships
  • Jefferson tried to assemble an army of nations to fight them
  • England and France didn't agree
  • We still fought Barbary in the First Barbary War

Marbury VS Madison
Through his secretary of state, James Madison, Jefferson refused William Marbury as the justice of the peace for Washington County. The Supreme court disagreed with the decision but had no jurisdiction over the matter at the time.

Election of 1800

  • Jefferson wanted separation of church & state
  • Federalists cast him as un-Christian for it
  • Jefferson tied with Aaron Burr
  • Final decision made by House of Representatives (each state = 1 vote)
  • Jefferson won election

12th Amendment
The twelfth amendment states that votes for president and vice president will be separate. This is due to the way the election of 1800 ended because of the tie between Jefferson and Aaron Burr

Burr VS. Hamilton

  • The two had a long running political battle
  • Personal grudges led the to competition as well
  • Burr shot Hamilton in a duel over his support for Thomas Jefferson
  • Hamilton died the next day

Embargo Act of 1807
The Embargo Act made any exports from the U.S. illegal. Jefferson sponsored the act because it forced France and Britain to respect our rights.
