Beowulf

Beowulf

  • Beowulf was written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon Poet in 700 A.D.
  • The version of the text we read in class was interpretated by Seamus Heaney and published in 2001.
  • Like a masteful linguist, Heaney seamlessly translated this classic text and epic poem.

Beowulf

  • Beowulf is an epic poem that tells the tale of Beowulf, himself, through many trials.
  • He defeats Grendel, "a powerful demon" (85), however, this leads to the death of his friend by Grendel's Mother.
  • Beowulf avenges his friend's death by "toppling the doomed/ House of her flesh" (1567-1568).

  • "For fifty winters...as warden of the land" (2208-2209) Beowulf rules as King
  • However the hands of fate shatters his utopia when a dragon attacks.
  • Beowulf defeats the dragon but sacrafices his own life.
  • Kenning is used repeatedly to develop imagery in each scene.
  • Ex. "word-hoard" (258) = vocabulary

Beowulf

  • As a young warrior,Beowulf demonstrates loyalty to both his King and to his comrades.
  • As an old King, he is loyal to his people, choosing to die for them.
  • He remained loyal to those around him, guarding the utopia he created with his life.

  • This helps him show his disdain for disloyal friends using only one sentence.
  • It also shows that disloyal people are sneaky like rodents.

  • Like many other television shows, Grey's Anatomy was created for entertainment purposes.
  • However, it has also made important commentary on social issues.

  • Grey's Anatomy employs alot of situtional irony to create dramatic effect.
  • The situational irony also enhances the central idea of loyalty.
  • The main characters of the show experience many unexpected hardships which are entertaining to watch.
  • The situational irony also enhances the central idea of loyalty.

This was a common quote between the main charcters. No matter what happened, they were always there for each other.

  • It tells the story of Hazel, a teenage girl with cancer, and her relationship with Augustus, who had "a little touch of osteosarcoma" (11).
  • The novel uses pathos to capture its readers' hearts and emotions.
  • Ex. "I was kind of crying by then." (258)

"The Fault in Our Stars"

  • "The Fault in Our Stars" shows both loyalty and disloyalty.
  • "How can you just break the promise?" (60) asked Isaac, a friend of Hazel and Augustus.
  • He experiences disloyalty in the book and is devastated.
  • Loyalty is shown towards and from Augustus too.

  • When speaking about Augustus, Isaac said, "I do not want to see a world without him." (258).
  • He and Hazel repeatedly went to extreme lengths to protect the people they loved.
  • They acted like a band of brothers who always looked out for each other.

  • Augustus showed loyalty when he and Hazel helped Issac get revenge for his broken heart.
  • Their friendship was a fortress that could not be defeated.
  • This was only possible because of their loyalty to each other.
