The WWII Memorial

The Memorial's Features:

  • The memorial is a mix of granite, bronze, and water elements that blend with lawn, trees, and shrubbery of the surrounding landscape.
  • Another feature of this memorial are areas where Veteran's remember their past memory by the sight of battle names and military campaign designations that are carved into stone.
  • In the center of the plaza is the "Rainbow Pool" with smaller fountains around it.

Some fun tips:

  • The start of the construction took place on the same September as 9/11.
  • This monuments plaza is 337 feet and 10 inches long, and 240 feet and two inches wide.
  • Famous to all WWII Veterans, "Kilroy was here", is inscribed on the WWII Memorial.

History of the WWII Memorial
WWII Veteran Roger Durbin proposed the idea of a memorial the Representative Marcy Kaptur from Ohio in 1987, and was approved in 1993. The construction of this memorial started in 2001 and ended in 2004. On May 29 of that year, after the reunion of those veterans, President George W. Bush dedicated this memorial because his father was also among those 16 Million who perished in the war.
