THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

BY MAC NELSON

WILBUR WRIGHT WAS BORN ON APRIL 16, 1867

ORVILLE WRIGHT WAS BORN ON APRIL 19, 1871

REFERRED THEMSELVES AS THE WRIGHT BROTHERS WHEN

THEY STARTED A PRINTING FIRM

IN THE 1900'S THEY USED THERE FIRST 50 LBS BIPLANE WITH 17-FOOT WINGSPAN.

THEY TESTED THE FIRST PLANE AT KITTY HAWK, NORTH CAROLINA.

In 1901 at kill devil hills, North Carolina they flew the largest glider with a

22 FOOT WINGSPAN AND NEARLY 100 POUNDS

AFTER KILL DEVIL HILLS THE WRIGHT BROTHERS BUILT A WIND TUNNEL TO UNDERSTAND HOWA

AIRFOIL WORKS AND TO CALCULATE WITH ACCURACY HOW WELL A PARTICULAR WING DESIGN WOULD FLY

They planned to build a new glider with a 32 foot wingspan with a tail

In 1902 they flew numerous test glides using their new glider

After months of studying propellers the wright brothers designed a motor

and a plane that weighed 700 lbs and was known as the flyer

They built a movable track to help move launch

The track going downhill would help the aircraft gain speed

One of two attempts to fly the aircraft resulted in a minor crash

On September 17, 1908 the first fatal passenger crash occurred.

Orville crashed and survived but his passenger lieutenant thomas selfridge , did not.

In 1904 Wilbur wright flew the flyer 2 for more than five minutes on November 9.
