PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Voyages of Zheng He

By Ram Nandula

Before the Voyages

Emperor Yongle sent 7 expeditions to the Indian Ocean basin

Purposes

  • To control foreign trade
  • To impress foreigners of the power of the Ming dynasty

During the Voyages

Zheng He led the expeditions between 1405 and 1433

He's Voyages

  • Visited southeast Asia, India, Ceylon, Arabia, and east Africa
  • Gave away Chinese goods and in exchange, received exotic gifts
  • Used military force to impress foreigners

After the Voyages

Ming emperors ended expeditions after He's 7th voyage

Reasons

  • Confucian ministers didn't trust He and his supporters
  • Resources for expeditions were better spent on agriculture
  • Mongols posed new threat, so the Chinese needed defense
