Where did the Vikings come from?

  • Their homeland was Scandinavia.
  • They sailed to other countries like Britain and Ireland by longboats.

Were the Vikings all bad?

  • Some Vikings went off raiding in ships and fighting.
  • Others came peacefully to settle and became farmers.

Where did the Vikings settle in Britain?

  • Most of the Vikings settled in Danelaw.
  • Some Norwegian Vikings sailed to Scotland and also they founded the city of Dublin in Ireland.

Life in Danelaw

  • There were 3 main areas, Northumbria(Yorkshire), East Anglia and the Five Boroughs(Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Stamford and Lincoln)
  • They were looking for a better life and most important city in Danelaw was the city of York where is an important place to trade goods.

What was the Viking society like?

  • The top Viking society was the king who kept their kingdom safe.
  • Below the king were the nobles or wealthy Vikings known as ''Jarls''. They were rich landowners or traders.
  • Below the nobles were the '' Karls'. Their jobs were farming and craft work.
  • The bottom of the society were the ''Thralls'' or ''Slaves''. They did the hardest, dirtiest jobs

The Viking Children

  • Babies and toddlers automatically stayed with their mothers at divorce.
  • The bigger children were divided between the parents according to the wealth and of the two families.
  • Children were also protected by the law as members of the family.
