When we think Underworld, We think of this Hades.

He is also known as Pluto

The start of the Underworld

  • Hades is one of the three main gods.
  • He was choosen to rule the Underworld.
  • The Underworld is a place where souls went after death.
  • Greek/Roman idea of afterlife.

The rivers

  • 5 main rivers
  • All the names were meant to reflect emotions dealing with death.
  • They all appear in both the real world and the underworld.
  • Styx, Acheron, Lethe, Phlegethon, Cocytus.

The Styx river
1. Most prominent
2. Most widely known
3. The river of Hatred

Acheron river
1. River of Pain
2. Charon, ferryman rows the dead over

Lethe River

1. River of Forgetfulness

Phlegethon River

  • River of Fire
  • River led to the depths of Tartarus

Cocytus river

River of wailing

Tartarus

  • Not directly part of the Underworld
  • Far beneath the Underworld as Earth is beneath the sky
  • Titans were sent here by Zeus

Fields of Punishment

  • Place for those who created havoc on Earth
  • Also for those who committed crimes against the Gods

Fields of Asphodel

Place where ordinary souls were sent

Elysian fields

  • A place where souls who achieved greatness in the real world were sent.
  • Easy afterlife and no labors.

Elysium

Souls had a choice to stay or be reborn

Isles of the Blessed

  • After being reborn three times and achieving Elysium all three times, the souls were sent to these islands
