When we think Underworld, We think of this Hades.
He is also known as Pluto
The start of the Underworld
- Hades is one of the three main gods.
- He was choosen to rule the Underworld.
- The Underworld is a place where souls went after death.
- Greek/Roman idea of afterlife.
The rivers
- 5 main rivers
- All the names were meant to reflect emotions dealing with death.
- They all appear in both the real world and the underworld.
- Styx, Acheron, Lethe, Phlegethon, Cocytus.

1. Most prominent
2. Most widely known
3. The river of Hatred
Acheron river
1. River of Pain
2. Charon, ferryman rows the dead over
Phlegethon River
- River of Fire
- River led to the depths of Tartarus
Tartarus
- Not directly part of the Underworld
- Far beneath the Underworld as Earth is beneath the sky
- Titans were sent here by Zeus
Fields of Punishment
- Place for those who created havoc on Earth
- Also for those who committed crimes against the Gods
Elysian fields
- A place where souls who achieved greatness in the real world were sent.
- Easy afterlife and no labors.
Isles of the Blessed
- After being reborn three times and achieving Elysium all three times, the souls were sent to these islands
