THE TRUE MARKS OF A DISCIPLE

JOHN 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (‭John‬ ‭13‬:‭34-35‬ NIV)

I. THIS LOVE DEFINED

a. It is a new kind of love
OT- “ ‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. (‭Leviticus‬ ‭19‬:‭18‬ NIV)a
NT- A new commandment I give to you, that you
love one another" - Jn 13:34

b. It is a Sacrificial Love
1. As Jesus explained in Jn 15:13
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ NIV)

2. As John wrote in 1Jn 3:16-18
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

3. As Paul commanded in Ep 5:1-2
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God-Eph 5:1-2

The church in Jerusalem - Ac 2:44-45
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. (‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭44-45‬ NIV)

The churches in Macedonia - 2Co 8:1-5
And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭8‬:‭1-5‬ NIV)

C. It is a Visible Love
By such love Jesus declared "all will know that you are My
disciples" - Jn 13:35

II. This Love Developed

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4‬:‭9-10‬

his is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭9-11‬ NIV)

b. We learn from Jesus
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. (‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭16‬ NIV)

C. We are to be stirred up by brethren
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭24-25‬ NIV)

III. This Love Demonstrated

A. In our Assembly
B. In our community

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭32‬ NIV)
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (‭Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬ NIV)

CONCLUSION

1. Jesus has revealed a powerful tool to persuade the world that we are
His disciples...
a. Certainly we show our discipleship by faithfulness to His
doctrine - cf. Jn 8:32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (‭John‬ ‭8‬:‭32‬ NIV)
b. But in a world that cares little for doctrinal distinctiveness,
a Christ-like love for one another is how Jesus would have us
convince the world! - cf. Jn 13:34-35

2. How is your love for your brother in Christ?
a. Is it Christ-like, i.e., a sacrificial love?
b. Is it observable, i.e., do people see your brotherly love in our
assemblies and community?

3. If you admit your love for your brethren needs work (and we all can
improve)...
a. Look to God and Jesus as the ultimate teachers of what it means
to love one another
b. Utilize opportunities to be with brethren…

So remember...

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as
I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all
will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one
another." (Jn 13:35)

"Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."
(1Jn 4:11)
