DEFINITION

  • Telegraph: a device that could send information over wires across great distances

MORSE CODE

  • The telegraph created a form of language communication called morse code
  • Morse Code- different combinations of dots and dashes that represent each letter of the alphabet

THE BIG BREAK

  • It took two years to comprehend how to connect the lines in two locations
  • After a presidential candidate nomination was announced over telegraph businesses, the government, newspapers, and private citizens started using the telegraph

GROWTH

  • The telegraph grew with the railroad system
  • The wires were strung next to the tracks
  • By the time of the transcontinental railroad the telegraph was famous across the U.S.
