THE SUMMONER

summoner

  • a summoner is a person who summons people to court for a crime related to religioun
  • during the middle ages many summoners were corrupt and would force people to give them money or they would summon them to court for a made up cause.

Fieryred babyish face,he has leprous and had close set eyes, black scabby brows and a scraggly beard, he has white pimples and bumps on his face.

SETTING

THE STORY TAKES PLACE IN the english countryside in a MARSHY DISTRICT CALLED HOLDERNESS.
in the english country side during the 14th century.

summary

  • the story starts with a friar preaching and begging on the street.
the friar begs for money from passing pedestrians and in return promises he will prey for them and give all the money to the church. but not only does he not prey for them he keeps all the money for himself. he then goes to sick thomas's house.

summary

  • at sick thomas's house he asks for a donation, and an extravegant meal.
Thomas is a very sickly man who has a large sum of money saved up and the friar is constantly asking for donations promising he will pay for him and god will heal him. he then asks for a large meal and fondle's Thomas wife. the wife then reveals her child recently died and the friar tells her him and other friars had a vision of her son walking through heavens gate. he then brags about how friars are so close to god and are constantly getting messages from him.

the friAR TELLS THOMAS THE REASON HE HAS NOT BEEN HEALED IS BECAUSE HE HAS DONATED SO LITTLE TO THE church.

the friar then reveals he has donated a large sum of money to about a dozen friars. the friar becomes upset because he has not given all his money solely to him he then scolds him, and tells him that a prayer is not very powerful if split into twelve parts. the friar then starts a small sermon about anger which involves three short stories.

the first is about an angry king who sentenced a knight to death because he returned without his partner assuming the knight had killed him. while on his way to be executed by another knight the knight they thought was dead was found. when they went back to the king the king sentenced all three to death. the first because he had already declared it, the second because he was the cause of the first knights death, and the third because he disobeyed the king by not executing the first knight.

the second story told was about king Cambises who was a drunk. one day one of his knights claimed that drunkenness caused people to lose their co-ordination. the king then shot an arrow and killed the knights son in order to prove him wrong.

the third story was about a persian king who had the river gyndes destroyed because one of his horses drowned in it.

  • the summoner asks for more money but Thomas is not being fooled this time.
the friar asks for more donations but Thomas isn't being fooled this time. Thomas tells the friar he has a gift that he is sitting on that the friar will only receive if he agrees to split it up evenly between each of the friars.

the friar agrees and eagerly puts his hand down Thomas's back. Thomas then lets out a huge fart. the friar is immediately angry and promises he will repay Thomas for the fart. he is then chased out by the servants.

summary

  • the friar goes to see the lord.
the friar then goes to the lord of the village. he tells the lord what has happened and asks how is he supposed to split a fart into twelve pieces. the lords squire gives a suggestion in exchange for a gowne-clooth. the squire suggests they get a cart wheel, then get each of the friars to lay their nose at the end of a spoke. the friar who was given the fart would then sit in the center of the wheel and fart. the spokes would carry the smell along the rim which would split the fart into twelve parts.
