THE SECOND SUDANESE CIVIL WAR

INTRODUCTION

  • It lasted from April of 1983 To January of 2005
  • Two million people have died as a result of war, famine and disease caused by the conflict
  • Four million people in southern Sudan have been displaced at least once
  • The war resulted in the splitting away of South Sudan six years after the war ended.
  • Government claimed oil fields when the country split.

MAIN CAUSES

  • Religious differences (ethnoreligious)
  • Natural resources (e.g. Oil)
  • Oil revenue makes up 70% of Sudan's export earning
  • Northern Sudan relying more on oil revenue than South
  • Unease over power of northern elites after Sudan broke.

RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS

SUDAN'S OIL REVENUE

  • There was oil fields located between the two main parts of sudan
  • The north wanted to control these resources as they have no suitable land for agriculture(Sahara)
  • The north needs these for revenue, bu the south also relies om foreign aid.

FOREIGN INTERVENTIONS AND THE RESOLUTION

  • The ELI, attempted to make a truce but it failed
  • The U.S. Charged the country with the genocide of 2 million people.
  • SPLA and Sudanese sign agreement on six-month renewable cease-fire in central Nuba.
  • Talks in Kenya lead to an agreement between southern rebels and Sudanese government.
  • North/South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) ends civil war in 2005
