THE STORY OF MY LIFE

2000-PRESENT

INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE

BILL CLINTON IMPEACHMENT

Bill Clinton was the 42nd United States president. During his time at the White House, our country saw a great decrease in unemployment and crime rates, as well as a surplus in budget.

Personally, I have not been greatly influenced by Bill Clinton, because he was only in office until I was 1. Although, I can connect to his wife, Hilary, because she is running in the 2016 Presidential Election.

In my opinion, Hilary Clinton is the lesser of the two evils between her and Donald Trump. Many Americans, including my family, fear what will happen to our country due to the lack of good candidates for the upcoming election.

GEORGE W. BUSH

George W Bush was America's 43rd president. He was best know for his behavior after 9/11 in the beginning of his presidency. He formed a new Department of Homeland Security, and sent American troops into Afghanistan. It was said that he "faced the greatest challenge of any president since Abraham Lincoln."

I can relate to George Bush a little more than I can to Bill Clinton. He was in office until I was 9. I was still too young to understand most of what he did during his presidency, but I remember my parents talking about him during his 2 terms.

His presidency definitely had its ups and downs, but I think it's safe to say that overall he was a pretty good president.

TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989. She became an international sensation in 2006 when she had her first #1 single, "Our Song." Her career only went up from there when she released her second album, Fearless. Her fifth and most recent album, 1989, is exceeding all of her expectations. Now with ten Grammys, Swift will go down in history as a very successful musician.

Not only was she successful in the music world, but she is also known for using social media to be a friend to her fans and show them how much she appreciates what they do. "I always want to go the extra mile for them, because I can't believe the extra thousand miles they've gone for me."

Taylor Swift has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember, but it wasn't until I entered middle school that I developed what some might call an obsession.

Her music has helped me through so much, and it almost feels like there is always a friend there to talk to whenever you need one. Last year I had the privilege of seeing her in concert, and I will never forget it.

Julie Andrews has been in many movies, including some older ones like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. I have been greatly influenced by both of these classics, as well as some of her more recent endeavors that came out in my lifetime.

The Princess Diaries, with Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway, have always been some of my favorite movies. They taught me to believe in myself, and that everyone can be beautiful.

TIM MCGRAW

Tim McGraw is one of the most popular American Country singers. He is married to fellow country singer, Faith Hill. His singles continue to top the charts. To name a few: "Indian Outlaw," "Don't Take the Girl," "I Like It, I Love It," and "Live Like You Were Dying."

I chose Tim McGraw as one of my influential people because he represents the whole genre of country music, as well as some magnificent movies that will go down in history as classics.

One movie he did that is a favorite of mine is The Blind Side, with Sandra Bullock and of course, Tim McGraw. This movie tugged at the heart strings of thousands of viewers and will forever be a classic favorite.

POLITICAL EVENTS

9-11 AND THE WAR ON TERRORISM

On September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers boarded four planes with lethal weapons. They forced the pilots to fly the planes into four national buildings. Early in the morning, the first plane crashed into one of the twin towers at the World Trade Center. A little while later, a second plane was crashed into the other tower, causing both to crumble to the ground and igniting buildings all around. Of the other two, one of the planes hit the Pentagon. The other plane was meant to hit the White House, but the passengers fought back against the hijackers and were able to take the plane down in a field in Pennsylvania.

I was very young when this tragic day took place, but it almost feels like I can remember it. The events of the day are known well by everyone. Every year there is remembrance even 15 years later, because it impacted us so much.

NAFTA/GLOBALIZATION

NAFTA stands for the North American Free Trade Agreement. It is signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It states that all of these countries can trade freely with each other.

This has influenced my life because it allows Americans like my family to use every day products from all of these countries, and it allows our products to be shipped to all of those countries.

OIL SPILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO

This was recognized as the worst oil spill in United States history. On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 people and millions of animals living in the Gulf. Underwater cameras revealed the the sunken rig was leaking oil about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The spill was finally capped 87 days later on July 15, 2010. By this time, an estimated 3.19 million barrels of oils had leaked into the Gulf.

This event is important to me because it impacted the whole world. I remember how everyone lived in fear while the world tried to figure out how to get to the bottom of the ocean to cap the leak. It didn't seem scientifically possible for a long time, and we all watched the wildlife slowly decease as more oil entered the water.

ELECTION OF BARACK OBAMA

Obama was first elected on November 5, 2008. He was the first elected African American president of the United States. This marks the end of centuries of inequality in America.

This influenced my life because it confirmed that African American's were completely integrated into society, and the work of people like MLK and Rosa Parks has finally paid off permanently.

LEGALIZATION OF GAY MARRIAGE

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The vote was 4-5.

This influenced my life because it showed the government really believes that marriage should be about love, no matter who it may be between.
