PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Story of My Life

as a Taekwondo Student

First, I signed up for classes, tried on the dobak (uniform)

The dobak consist of a jacket and pants with the symbol of our school and the words USTC on the pants which stand for: United States Taekwondo committee

Then I went to white belt classes, actually learning some words in Korean

These are some of the commands the intsructors say during the class. To know know what to call your instructor, you go by what dan they are:
1st-3rd dan: (assistant instructor)Boo Sabum Nim
4th-6th: (teacher or instructor) Sahbum Nim
7th and 8th: (master) Sahyun Nim
8th and 9th: (grand master) Saseong Nim

After white belt classes, I started going to regular color belt classes with everyone else

These are some of the color belts in Taekwondo. The order goes: white belt, yellow stripe, yellow belt, green stripe, green belt, blue stripe, blue belt, red stripe (my current belt), red belt, black stripe, 1st dan, 2nd dan, 3rd dan, and so forth.

There, I learned self defense, sparring, and new patterns

This is Grand Master Van Bihn. He is teaching the students around him a way to escape the choke hold.

The first few classes, I saw green stripes and higher breaking wood with their feet and hands

The first few classes, I saw green stripes and higher breaking wood with their feet and hands

This is Sahyun Nim, he opened the first dojang way back when. This picture is when the school first opened, he is teaching his students how to break wood with many 1 inch thick boards.

I learned new moves to get out of different grips by going to seminars with GM Van Binh

This is Grand Master Van Binh teaching at last year's seminar.

Being a higher belt means having to remember your old patterns and new patterns. I was finally able to break wood with different kicks

This is a picture of the wood I broke in half after one of my testings for a higher up belt. When you reach green stripe, you must break wood for every testing. You get three tries to break it, your instructor tells you which movement you have to break the wood with. The movement though, is one that you have learned with the belt you have currently.

I went to two tournaments. The last one I went to, I got a minor concussion.

This is a tournament from last year which was at Archbishop Ryan. These two black belts are from a branch of Red Tiger. My red tiger school is the head quarters, where I get the three teachers who were the one who opened Red Tiger.

I can teach younger belts their movements (talking in Korean of course.) Now I have my red stripe, two more belts and I’ll be receiving my black belt.
