Socialism~ A political theory advocating state ownership of industry

Communism~ A political system in which the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country

Representative Democracy -A system of government in which citizens elect representatives, or leaders, to make decisions about the laws for all the people

Cold War 1945-1991/ a conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union/ the nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years

Big Three allies during WWII; Soviet Union - Stalin, United Kingdom - Churchill, United States - Roosevelt

United Nations An international organization formed after WWII to promote international peace, security, and cooperation

East Germany After WWII, Germany was divided into two countries, this part was COMMUNIST

West Germany British, American and French zone of Germany and was DEMOCRATIC

Yalta Conference 1945 Meeting with US president FDR, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and and Soviet Leader Stalin during WWII to plan for post-war Europe

Berlin Blockade The blockade was a Soviet attempt to starve out the allies in Berlin in order to gain supremacy/ blockade was a high point in the Cold War, and it led to the Berlin Airlift

Berlin Airlift airlift in 1948 that supplied food and fuel to citizens of west Berlin when the Russians closed off land access to Berlin

NATO 1949/ military alliance formed to stand firm against Soviet military threats/ made between the U.S., Great Britain, France, and other nations/ NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION

Warsaw Pact An alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations/ in response to the NATO

Containment American policy of resisting further expansion of communism around the world
