PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ARISTOTLE

  • Greek philosopher
  • Thought earth was the center of all things
  • Stars are so far away the parallax cannot be seen with the naked eye

ARISTARCHUS

  • Greek astronomer and mathematician
  • Proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system
  • Ideas were not widely accepted

PTOLEMY

  • Egyptian astronomer, geographer and mathematician
  • His book The Almagest is based on observations of the planets going back 800 years
  • Developed a geocentric model that lasted 14 centuries

COPERNICUS

  • Polish astronomer
  • Everything no was still based on observations made by the naked eye
  • His new model fit observations better than the geocentric models

KEPLER

  • German mathematician
  • Realized planetary motions were not circular
  • Keplers laws:
  • 1) planetary orbits are ellipse with the sun at one focus
  • 2) planets move faster in their orbits when closer to the sun
  • 3) relates the distance of a planet from the sun to the time it takes to go once around its orbit

GALILEO

  • Scientist
  • Asked questions that we now call scientific methods
  • Made improvements to the telescope
  • His observations showed that earth was not the only object that could be orbited
  • Also observed that Venus goes through phases similar to those of our moon
