mAJOR fUNCTIONS

  • The skeletal system gives the body a frame
  • Some bones protect vital organs from injury like the skull and rib cage
  • They skeletal system also stores minerals

Explanation of joints

  • Hinge joints are formed between two or more bones where the bones can only move along one axis to flex. Elbow, knees, and fingers are where they are located
  • Pivot- A joint that allows only rotary movement. The neck and the vertebrate are where they are located
  • Boll-and-Socket is a joint in which the rounded surface of a bone moves within a depression on another bone, allowing greater freedom of movement than any other kind of joint. Shoulders and hips are where they are located.

How the sKELETAL SYSTEM WORKS WITH OTHER SYSTEMS

  • Nervous System - the vertebral column holds the spinal cord, needed for nervous connections throughout the body.
  • Cardiovascular System - Red Bone Marrow produces erythrocytes.
  • Endocrine System - The adrenal glands secrete erythropoietin which stimulates red blood cell production in the red bone marrow.

how the skeletal system works with others 2

  • Respiratory System - The hyoid bone prevents collapse of the windpipe, therefore, allowing us to breathe.
  • Muscle System - The skeletal muscles have insertions to the bones for support and movement.

Skeletal system facts

  • An adult's skeletal system consists 206 bones, 32 teeth and a network of other structures that connect the bones together.
  • The hands and feet contain over half of the body's bones.
  • Some people have an extra rib that can cause health issues
  • Ancient Egyptians developed the world's first functional prosthetic bone.
