The major conflict shown in The Secret Garden is between each character and their own negative thoughts.

CONFLICTs

  • Example 1 - Mary is isolated in the beginning of the story because she is unkind, rude, and Ill tempered. She is also lonely and deeply displaced. These conflicts she has with herself lead her to find the garden, make friends, and to improve her ways and negative traits.

CONFLICTs

  • Example 2 - Colin believes he his very ill and will become a cripple or a hunchback. He cries and complains almost every free second he gets. Because he has this idea in his mind that he will not live to grow up, it takes a long time for him, with the help of Mary to come to his senses and realize that he is just fine. It was only this conflict that he had that caused him to believe the worst.

THEME

THE MAIN IDEA OF A STORY

The theme in the secret garden is, the relationship between landscape and health. An example of this would be how the garden helps Mary and Colin. It gets Mary more interested, involved, and even somewhat physically active. It turns her bitterness into joy. The garden helps Colin because each day he goes he grows stronger and stronger and soon believes that he will live forever and ever! It causes him to be happy and healthy and he soon forgets his hysterics.
