The rock cycle is Earth's natural process of recycling rocks and sediments.

There are three types of rocks.

Igneous rocks are formed from magma, the molten form of Earth's mantle layer. They can form from a volcano's lava, or they may form under the Earth's surface.

Sedimentary rocks form from weathered pieces of other rocks or from shells of sea creatures. These rocks are squeezed and cemented together.

Metamorphic rocks form always start out as other rocks, but form under intense heat and pressure.

How rocks change...
Igneous or sedimentary rocks can become metamorphic with intense heat and pressure.
Igneous or metamorphic rocks can be broken down (weathered) and then compressed into a sedimentary rock.
Sedimentary or metamorphic rocks may rejoin the molten layer and become igneous.
