THE ROARING TWENTIES

RED SCARE:

  • The term given to fear of and reaction against political radicals in the United States
  • Fear of a potential rise of communism
  • Waving their symbolic red flag communist cried out for an end to capitalism everywhere.

PALMER RAIDS

  • The arrest of anarchists (people who oppose any form of government), communist, and socialist
  • The group invaded homes and businesses, and jailing anyone under suspicion
  • Later Palmer wasn't able to find evidence causing people to decide he didn't know what he was talking about

SACCO & VAZETTI

  • These two men were both Italian anarchists immigrants who evaded the draft during World War One
  • Both were later arrested and charged with murder and robbery of a factory paymaster and his guard
  • Convicted mainly because of their political beliefs and ethnic backgrounds
  • Described as a miscarriage of justice in American legal history

KU KLUX KLAN

  • Was a short-lived phenomenon that fueled intolerance for blacks, Catholics, Jews, and immigrants.
  • This group moved into many states to dominate local and state politics
  • Membership was not limited to the poor, and uneducated. Even doctors and lawyers and ministers joined in.
  • The 1920's was the klans peak that reached up to 4 million people.

AUTO INDUSTRY:

U.S PRODUCTION OF AUTOMOBILES STOOD AT NEARLY 2.3 MILLION

ASSEMBLY LINE

  • Manufacturing process which parts are added to finish a product much faster
  • Each worker typically performs one simple operation
  • All parts of are handled through conveyors or motorized vehicles

HENRY FORD

  • An American industrialist the founder of the ford motor company
  • Sponsor of the assembly line technique of mass production
  • Manufacture the first automobile that many middle class Americans could afford
  • DID NOT invent the automobile

PROHIBITION:

THE FORBIDDING OF ALCOHOL AND THINGS RELATING TO ALCOHOL

18TH AMENDMENT

  • Banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol
  • Ratified on January 16th, 1919 and repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933
  • Only amendment to have repealed

21ST AMENDMENT

  • Repealed the 18th amendment
  • Only one to repeal a previous amendment
  • Gave the right to determine alcohol laws for their own state

ORGANIZED CRIME

  • Police funding increased to $11.4 million due to crime
  • Because of the prohibition people turned more and more to criminal activity
  • Example- Al Capone
  • Bootleg alcohol is what fueled the work of organized crime.

SCOPES TRIAL:

FAMOUS AMERICAN LEAGAL CASE OF A TEACHER TEACHING HUMAN EVOLUTION

CLARENCE DARROW

  • American lawyer and leading member of the American civil liberties union
  • Defended John T. Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial in which he opposed William Jennings Bryan
  • Remains notable for his humor and cleverness. One of the most famous American lawyers.

W.J BRYAN

  • Leading American politician
  • Standing three times as it's candidate for presidency of the United States
  • United States Secretary of State under president Woodrow Wilson
  • Promoted free silver in 1896, anti-imperialism in 1900, and trust-busting in 1908 and author of gold speech
  • Strong supporter of prohibition and the non teachings of evolution

DECISION ?

  • Scopes was found guilty and fined $100 ($1300 in today's money)
  • Overturned scopes conviction on a technicality
  • The bible can be interpreted many different ways

HARLEM RENAISSANCE:

WAS A CULTURAL MOVEMENT THAT SPANNED THE 1920'S

JAZZ

  • Beginning in New Orleans to Chicago, New York, and Kansas City
  • Jazz music influenced all aspects of society, and took the United States by storm.
  • End of the World War One until the start of the depression is known as "jazz age"

LANGSTON HUGHES

  • Is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance
  • American poet, social activist, novelist, and columnist

TIN PAN ALLEY

  • The name is given to the collection of New York music publishers and songwriters

POPULAR PEOPLE

CHARLES LINDBERGH:

  • Also known as lucky Lindy
  • First ever to fly a straight shot across the Atlantic Ocean
  • 33 hours from New York to Paris

BABE RUTH

  • American professional baseball player
  • MLB pitcher and outfielder playing for 22 seasons
  • Known for his influence of expanded the popularity of baseball in the 1920's
  • Greatest sports hero in American culture

JACK DAMPSEY

  • American professional boxer
  • Many of his fights set numerous records including the first million dollar gate
  • Member of the international boxing hall of fame
