WHAT YEAR WAS THIS FOUNDED IN?

  • 1636

WHO FOUNDED RHODE ISLAND?

  • Roger Williams
  • Anne Hutchinson

They founded it because Williams felt like Massachusetts did not own land because they did not by it from the native, so the colony of Massachusetts threw him out and he fled to Rhode Island and founded Providence, Rhode Island.

Anne Hutchinson helped found Rhode Island as well. She got thrown out of Massachusetts because she thought that you don't have to pray and do good. She thought that the faith was enough. 2 years after Providence, Rhode Island was founded she came and helped found Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

HOW WAS THE COLONY FOUNDED?

  • Roger Williams brought followers from Massachusetts
  • Got kicked out of original land
  • The followers and Roger Williams had to go across the Seekonk river for land
  • That land became Providence, Rhode Island

WHO SETTLED IN RHODE ISLAND?

  • People who got religiously persecuted

WHAT IMPORTANT PEOPLE LIVED IN RHODE IsLAND?

  • Peter Harrison-a merchant and a very important architect who designed many Georgian churches.
  • Mary Dyer-executed for her religious believes. She was also a Quaker.

Rhode Island was unique because they had religious toleration.The idea for the colony, was that it was a safe place for everybody.

IMPORTANT EVENTS

  • 1636-Roger Williams fled to Rhode Island from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
  • 1662-Connecticut gets charter from Britain saying that land up to the west shore of Narraganset Bay was Connecticut's.

IMPORTANT EVENS (CON'D)

  • 1663-King Charles II grants new charter that forces Massachusetts to let go of its claim on Rhode Island's land. The charter also created boundaries between Rhode Island and Connecticut. The charter from Connecticut was not a threat anymore.
