In 1820, a group of trappers in the northern territory of the Louisiana Purchase (now the US states of North Dakota and South Dakota) suffer an ambush by a group of Sioux Indians carrying furs stolen; however some manage to escape. Among the survivors, Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), the only man who knew the route back, mortally wounded by the attack of a grizzly bear. Seeing the enormous difficulty of carrying a dying man, and in the harsh winter,
the captain of the expedition Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson) is forced to leave in the forest with indigenous son of Glass, Hawk (Forrest Goodluck) and two of his men, the young Jim Bridger (Will Poulter) and former military officer John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Fitzgerald had always seemed at odds with Glass, and once tries to assassinate him, according to him to free him from his agony. However, Hawk stands and is stabbed to death in front of a Glass impotent, unable to move from his wounds.
Fitzgerald lies Bridger to leave the place and let Glass to their fate. Surprisingly he is recovering from his wounds and begins an odyssey to try to survive the northern climate, besides going Fitzgerald seeking to avenge the death of his son.
