What led to the reformation

  • Martin Luther began the Reformation in the early 1500's 
  • The Pope was to involved in the politics 
  • Clergy were being corrupt & weren't behaving according to the church
  • The bible was written in Latin, a language only used by the clergy & Pope 
  • There were selling of Indulgences, getting people to give their money away 

origins of the anglicanism church

  • Founded in 1534 by King Henry VIII in Englad
  • His reasons were for his own selfish acts of wanting a divorce  
  • He didn't want to share England's wealth with the church
  • The religion got blended elements from both Catholicism & Protestantim

beliefs about sin/salvation

  • Sins got washed away with Baptism 
  • Believe in god, regret your sins, & receive god's mercy 

ultimate source of authority

  • The head of the church was the ruler of England 
  • Teaching would be translated by Clergy in their own ways 
  • The clergy had to be loyal to the ruler of England

rituals and worship

  • High church service was like a formal Catholic mass 
  • Lower church service was more like a Lutheran service

  • High church was made up of wealthy people 
  • Low church was made up of working & middle class 
  • Freedom to choose worship as long as loyal to ruler
