PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Many people may ask: "What is a piano?"
The piano is an acoustic instrument that creates sound when hammers strike strings of different length.
A hammer strikes a key producing sound.
The pianist presses or strikes keys that cause the hammers to move. The harder the press, the louder the sound.
There are two types of acoustic pianos. Both have their own varaition.
One is the grand piano. The strings lay in a horizontal position. Grands are used in concert halls because of their sustaining tone quality.
The other type is the upright piano. The strings lay in a vertical position. Uprights are very common because of their smaller size and more affordable price.
The piano is based on the technology of early keyboard instruments like the pipe organ and the harpsichord.
Bartolomeo Cristofori is credited with the invention of the piano. He was a master harpsichord maker and he used his knowledge to create the piano. It is not known when it was first invented, but it was created before the year 1700.
The piano took the best parts of the clavichord and the harpsichord. The clavichord had expressive volume and sustain, but could not be heard in concert halls. The harpsichord could produce a loud sound, but there was no variation in dynamics.
Today, many people have a piano in their house, and many more enjoy playing and listening to the beautiful sound probably the most famous musical instrument.
