THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MOVIE AND THE REAL WAR

BENJAMIN MARTIN

  • The main character in the Patriot
  • Played by Mel Gibson
  • Not actual revolutionary person
  • Can be closely related to Francis Marion the "swamp fox"
  • Was a bad rocking chair maker

GENERAL LORD CORNWALLIS

  • An actual revolutionary figure, who was in command of British troops
  • Was depicted, with all of the British soldiers to be the bad guy, to make the movie entertaining
  • He was shown as a person of power who looks down on everyone around him

COL. TAVINGTON

  • Fictional character, who is the main antagonist
  • Based off of Banastre Tarleton who was nicknamed the "butcher"
  • His character is portrayed as a killer who doesn't care who you are
  • When in reality the colonist were more brutal than British

CAPTAIN WILKINS

  • Not a big role in the movie
  • Provides a Benedict Arnold like character to the movie
  • A loyalist who ends up killing everyone from his town
  • He is a does whatever col. Tavington tells him

GABRIEL MARTIN

  • Large role in the movie
  • No close relation to anyone from the Revolutionary War
  • Benjamin Martin's son

GENTLEMEN'S WARFARE

  • Line to line combat firing straight into lines of the enemy
  • Depicted correctly in the movie

MILITIA AMBUSHES

  • The fighting style of colonial militia were depicted correctly

TREATMENT OF SLAVES

  • The movie barely showed slaves and when it did they were all happy
  • Realistically this was not the case, because most slaves didn't like being slaves

BATTLE OF COWPENS

  • The battle of cow pens was an actual battle
  • However events show in the movie did not happen there

BATTLE OF YORKTOWN

  • Only a little was shown in the movie of this battle
  • The material shown was historically accurate
  • The French navy did blockade the sea, helping trap the Brithish
