Exemplum

  • Definition: short story that illustrates a particular moral point.
  • Example: "Pardoner's Tale" is an exemplum on the subject of greed.

Prediction/Foreshadowing

  • Definition: predict- make guesses about what will happen next
  • Definition: foreshadowing- hints about future events in a story
  • Example: Seeing the shadow of a bad guy in a scary movie...

  • Watch "Sleepy Kittens" video and ask... what is being foreshadowed? Write down your answer.

  • Definition: Contrast between expectation and reality
  • Example: Chaucer talks about his character's faults and their humanity
  • Example: "Yet he was rather close as to expenses/And kept the gold he won in pestilences/Gold stimulates the heart, or so we're told./He therefore had a special love of gold"
