PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN

Written by: Katherine Applegate

Retold by: Rebecca

Crash! Bang! Boom!

My parents.

Dead.

My sister and I.

Taken.

My sister died.

In the truck

She couldn't leave her old life behind.

I could.

That's why I survived.

I WISH TO BE ONE OF THE FREE ANIMALS.

BUT ALL I AM IS A GORILLA.

A GORILLA NOT FREE IN THE WILD.

A GORILLA STUCK IN A MALL.

My comforts live in the Big Top Mall with me.

An elephant named Stella

And a stray dog named Bob

I am the One and only Ivan, Mighty Silverback.

I am the only gorilla I still know of.
Alive.

There is a little girl,
Julia,
With a half moon smile.

She is an artist like me.

I have no one to protect in this glass domain.

Until a baby elephant arrives, named Ruby.

Stella dies.

I promise her that I will protect Ruby.

Ruby is a joyful elephant.
She asks a lot of questions.

Mack, the mall owner came one day.

He took Ruby to do Stella's tricks.

He had a claw stick in hand.

A claw stick is a stick with a claw shaped point at the end.

Stella once saw someone use a claw stick on a bull in her old circus.

She never saw the bull again.

It was time to save Ruby from this place

Julia introduced me to finger paints.

She gave me some and paper.

I was going to make a big picture for Ruby.

I was forgetting something on my poster. Words, letters.

The ones that humans use.

I hid my drawing under my dirty pool.

That didn't work. Mack sold it.

I then took the stuffing out of Not-Tag, my stuffed gorilla. I hid it there. And waited. To show it to Ruby.

The day came.

I showed it to Ruby.

"That's me Ivan! A-and that's a red giraffe? The symbol for the zoo?" She said.

The day came.

I gave it to Julia. And her father.

To put on the billboard that beckons people here

My poster said four words. Home. A picture of the zoo was underneath it.

In the morning people came with signs to protest that Ruby goes to live in the zoo.

The next day Mack was real mad. He was banging chairs all over.

I saw a box with the zoo symbol on it.

We were going away.

I was leaving for the zoo tomorrow.

I let Bob have Not-Tag.

Mack said goodbye to me.

At first I felt depressed, I didn't want to leave Bob and Julia.

I knew it was the best for Ruby and me, though.

I have arrived at my home.
Ants. Flowers. Trees. Grass. Water. Gorillas. All there.

I live with three gorillas.

A juvenile male.

And two females.

One day.

Julia came with Bob in her backpack.

George, her father is getting a job here!

I saw Ruby from a tree.

She is happy.

I just know this is going to be a happy life.
