RAILROADS AND CANALS

• Many railroads and canals spread through the U.S.
• In 1840s over 31,000 miles of railroad

EARLY LOCOMOTIVES

• First locomotives very important
• Broke down often and went slowly
• Could take people around the U.S.
• First ever one lost in a race with a horse (Tom Thumb)
