Some important events in the history of Memphis

• The formation of the state - The natives of the land, the Chickasaw Indians sold their land to the government of the United States, in the year 1818. Three important people then decided to form a new town.

• Andrew Jackson, John Overton, and James Winchester are the three Tennesseans who identified that if a city is formed here, and then there could be great financial benefits for the state.

• The city was then purchased by the government and was open for Europeans to come and settle there. The economy of the city was depending on the cotton mills that were functioning there, and the labor force was mainly the slaves from other underdeveloped countries.

• During the civil war, Memphis took the side of the confederacy and they had a very strongly ingrained belief on the confederacy that more than 70 confederate companies were formed by the recruits from this city alone.

• Back in the time, the city did not have proper sanitary conditions and was often flooded with waters. This led to the over breeding of mosquitoes that caused yellow fever.
