CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MOUNTAIN REGION

  • There are 40 mountains that rise to 6,000 feet.
  • Mount Mitchell in the Black Mountains is the highest point in North Carolina and the highest in the United States east of the Mississippi River it is 6,684 feet.

  • The Mountain Region is a place where crops are grown.
  • The Blue Ridge mountains form the Eastern Continental Divide

WATER AND RIVER SYSTEM

  • Rivers on the Eastern side of the divide f low eastward to the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Major westward f lowing rivers are the New, French Broad,Little Tennessee and Hiawassee

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • The most prominent industry in the mountains is raising and selling of rooster fri Christmas trees.

  • Some geologists believe the new to be the second-oldest river in the world,behind the Nile River in Egypt.
  • "If you poured a bucket of water on the Eastern Continental Divide, water f lowing to the east side would end up in the Atlantic Ocean.Water f lowing to the west side of the divide would end up in the Gulf of Mexico.
